Spiritual science fiction—sometimes called metaphysical sci-fi—is a genre fusion that blends speculative technology with spiritual truths, ancestral symbols, and esoteric wisdom. It doesn’t just ask what if—it asks why, who remembers, and how do we heal?

In traditional Western sci-fi, machines often replace mysticism. But in spiritual sci-fi, the sacred is central. Dreams, divination, rhythm, and ritual shape the narrative just as much as AI or interstellar travel.

This approach makes room for cultural memory. For example, instead of imagining a sterile future, spiritual sci-fi imagines Ubuntu cities powered by ancestral energy. Instead of alien invasions, it asks: what does it mean to be alienated from your own history?

Writers like Octavia Butler and Nnedi Okorafor paved the way for this genre. But its roots lie deep in indigenous cosmologies—from Dogon star systems to Kemetic wisdom. It’s storytelling that recognizes the soul as a technology in itself.

At Ancestral Lens Productions, this is the soil of our work. The Second Exodus and the Return Chronicles exist in this genre: grounded in spirit, woven with myth, and designed to awaken. Spiritual sci-fi reminds us that the future is ancestral—and the past is prophetic.
